Bursaries

Grace Bethel Bursary

Grace Bethel was a Registered Nurse at the Truro Hospital and was the Director of Nursing at the hospital at the time of her retirement. Grace passed away in Truro in 2012 at the age of ninety- seven.

Grace was much loved by all who knew her including patients, hospital staff, and those in the Community. Nursing and all medical fields were important to Grace and especially important to her were the children. She believed that children would enjoy success through education and she always had a strong desire to do everything she could to assist however possible.

Grace was a long-standing member of the Colchester Hospital Auxiliary. To fulfil her desire to help the children with their education Grace and her husband set up an investment within the Auxiliary that was intended to provide bursaries to the children. This fund still functions today having provided much needed financial support to many area students over the years.

The Bursary Fund is administered by the Bursary Fund Committee within the Colchester Hospital Auxiliary. Two bursaries of two thousand dollars each are available to graduating students from the Truro East Hants areas who have chosen nursing or another medically related field as their career.

Applications can be obtained School Councillors and are submitted to the Auxiliary Bursary Committee who ultimately choose two students to receive the bursaries each graduating year. The bursaries are paid directly to the University or Secondary School of the student’s choice at the beginning of their second semester.

The Colchester Hospital Auxiliary ask that all students who meet the criteria of the Grace Bethel Bursary contact School Counsellors as early as possible and complete an application. The bursary recipients will be announced at the Graduation ceremonies of those awarded the bursaries.

The Colchester Hospital Auxiliary Bursary

The Colchester Hospital Auxiliary is proud to offer bursaries to assist Colchester East Hants Health Centre (CEHHC) staff in the following fields:

  • LPN’s training to become RN’s
  • RN’s pursuing graduate work
  • Other CEHHC employees wishing to upgrade their skills provided they are in a medical field

The program was initiated in 2003 and since its inception has helped many with their very important studies. The original Bursary was available to LPN’s and RN’s only. The Auxiliary opted in 2017 to amend the criteria for this bursary to include staff in other medical fields within the Hospital.

These bursaries are a sum of two thousand dollars each and two bursaries per year are available. The bursary is offered only to those employed at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre and is offered in May of each year. The bursary is paid directly to the School of choice of the individual awarded the funds.

All applications are reviewed by the Bursary Committee to determine which candidate will be awarded the bursary for that year.  The bursary can only be awarded once to a staff member.

Hospital staff who meet the criteria of the bursary, and wish to apply for consideration, must submit an application form and the required documentation by the following application deadline date:

  • May 15 – Annual application deadline date, with all supporting documentation
  • June 1 – Successful candidate will be notified

We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only the successful candidate will be notified.

Unsuccessful applicants may reapply for the bursary in a subsequent year, provided they resubmit an application form and the required documentation by the application deadline date for that year.

Questions may be directed to the Bursary Committee by calling  (902) 895 8939 and leaving your name and telephone number. A committee member will contact you.
